Amp Up Arts, administered through the 桃子视频 Arts Council, has expanded to eight MCPSS schools in recent months, connecting local artists with students and offering other types of academic enrichment.

"Amp Up Arts exists for us to provide the arts to students in any way we can, because we believe in the power of arts education," said Kathleen Kirk Stoves, Education and Outreach Coordinator at 桃子视频 Arts Council.

The arts programs included a Sunny Side Theater field trip for fifth-graders at Semmes Elementary and a summer art class at Robbins Elementary. Ongoing arts programs include:

  • Chastang-Fournier K-8: Three murals painted by students with guidance from local artists; weekly dance and visual arts classes during the summer; weekly theatre classes provided by Sunny Side Theater; and visual arts class weekly this school year.
  • George Hall Elementary School: Artist who worked with students over eight days to create indoor mural.
  • Florence Howard Elementary School: Teaching artist and garden club master gardener instruction by 桃子视频 Urban Growers each month, in partnership with the Fuse Project.
  • Leinkauf Elementary School: Mural artist in residency, working with students weekly.
  • Calloway-Smith Middle School: Teaching artist who leads weekly art club through partnership with the Fuse Project.
  • LeFlore High School: Support for the “Strings in Schools” program provided by 桃子视频 Symphony Orchestra.

"Some schools want a mural; some want a music program or a drama program. I negotiate with the schools to see what’s going to work for them and their students, and then work to provide it," Stoves said. Interested principals or teachers are encouraged to contact Stoves at kat@mobilearts.org.
